Parish officials met Thursday morning in the courthouse to listen to the latest from the National Weather Bureau and they liked what they heard.

Andy Patrick of the National Weather Bureau forecasted that Vermilion Parish will only be hit by rain Friday morning and afternoon and temperatures will stay above freezing.

Patrick did say that further west in Cameron Parish, light sleet is expected to fall Friday morning.

Those words prompted city and parish officials to make a decision about what buildings will open and close.

Abbeville Mayor Mark Piazza said City Hall will be opened for business on Friday after listening to Patrick.

He did warn residents to avoid running their water because it lowers the water pressure in the city.

The Courthouse elected to close early Thursday at 3 p.m. and all day on Friday.

The Police Jury, Clerk of Court and the Tax Assessor’s offices are all closed.

Garbage pickup on Friday will take place, however, Police Jury President Wayne Touchet said it will be picked up later in the day. Touchet said trucks will be on the road after the sun rises and pickup trash throughout the day.
