Labor leader

SHREVEPORT – Services are pending for labor leader and civil rights activist Roosevelt Smalley. He died May 28 at age 70.

He was president and long-time spokesman for the Central Trades and Labor Council of Northwest Louisiana, elected as its first black president in 1999. He was a member of the Louisiana AFL-CIO Hall of Fame.

Shell landman

BATON ROUGE – Services for retired Shell landman Jerry Perry, Sr. will be Thursday. He died May 24, two days after his 86th birthday.

He retired after 34 years as district land manager, on-shore divisiion of Shell in New Orleans. He was once described as “a horse trader in a Brooks Brothers suit.”

Survivors include his wife Mary and four children.

Arrangements are by Resthaven.

Grambling trainer

GRAMBLING – Services were Saturday for long-time Grambling State Unifgersity athletic trainer Euene “Doc” Harvey. He died May 22.

He was a World War II veteran whose first job was a a trainer for the Brooklyn and Los Angeles Dodgers. He was trainer at Grambling for decades and inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame and the National Athletic Trainers Hall of Fame as well as the GSU Legends Hall of Fame.

Survivors include two daughters.

Arrangements were by Miller’s.

Teacher of the blind

BATON ROUGE – Services for nationally recognized teacher of the blind Madeline Canova will be June 9. She died May 16 at age 68.

She was a teacher of the blind at state schools for 44 years and received the National Federation of the Blind Educator of the Year award.

Survivors include a son and a daughter.

Former NBA player

BATON ROUGE – Services for former professional basketball player James Williams will be Tuesday. He died May 22 at age 59,

Nicknamed “Shirt” he was a standout basketball player at Xavier University and then played for the Seattle Supersonics. He was a radio accounting executive and was director of student affairs at Camelot Career College for 17 years.

Survivors include his wife Gloria, four sons and a daughter.

Arrangements were by Halls.

Maritime lawyer

NEW ORLEANS – Services were Saturday for maritime lawyer and civic leader Donald Hoffman. He died May 22 at age 76.

He was a one-time New Orleans City Attorney and founder of the Louisiana Bar Foundation and a founding member of the board of trustees of the National World War II Museum and of the board of the World Trade Center and the Baton Rouge Center for World Affairs. He was founder-president of the French-American Chamber of Commerce, Louisiana Chapter.

Survivors include his wife Louise and two sons.

Successful retailer

MONROE – Services for retailer Jasper Haddad will be Wednesday. He died May 26 at age 90.

Following World War II, he opened a hardware and appliance business in Monroe, becoming at one point the largest single-store sales volume dealer of Maytag Corp.

Survivors include his wife Joyce, a son and a daughter.
