The Ambassador of France came to the little of community of Leroy for a special medal presentation to a native of Leroy.

Francis DeLattre was in the community to pay Lorsey Sonnier, 88, the highest honor by giving him the Legion of Honor of Medal on Thursday.

“France is paying tribute to American soldiers who risk their lives for the freedom of France and Europe,” DeLattre said.

The medal is given to living World War II veterans who helped France gain their freedom in World War II.

Sonnier was a tail gunner on a B-17 bomber plane. He flew 206 hours over Germany and France on the plane. On the B-17 plane, Ack-Ack Annie, he flew 143 missions.

The ceremony was held at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church Hall in Leroy.
