The Gulf Coast Bank 29’rs are on the march, having defeated Northside (Lafayette) 12-1 in five innings at Faubacher Field in Lafayette on Tuesday night.

With the win, Abbeville’s American Legion squad improves to 2-0 on the young season.

VC grad Ryan Domingue picked up the win on the hill for the 29’rs. Domingue went three innings, surrendering one run (unearned) on two hits while striking out three and walking two.

Domingue also went 4-for-4 at the plate with a triple, two RBIs and a run scored.

“I had a rough first inning on the mound,” said Domingue. “But, the defense played really well after that. We swung the bats really well. There’s nothing more we could have asked for than what we did.”

The 29’rs jumped on the home team early, putting up three runs in the first inning to take a permanent lead.

Northside cut that lead to 3-1 in the first inning, but the 29’rs answered with two runs in the second inning.

A two-run Abbeville third inning made any comeback unlikely. The 29’rs slammed the door on Northside with a big, five-run fifth inning.

Brett Meaux struck out one Northside batter and walked one in one inning of relief.

29’rs head coach Andre Boudreaux handed the ball to Abbeville High graduate R.J. Frederick to finish off Northside on the hill. Frederick did not disappoint, striking out the side and allowing no hits in the final inning of play.

Frederick went 2-for-4 with a triple, scoring three runs.

Dustin Waguespack also went 2-for-4 with three runs scored. He had a stolen base and an RBI as well.

Steven Sparkman had a two-RBI double; Peyton Durke scored a run and stole a base after an RBI single and Peter Broussard went 1-for-3 with a run scored and two stolen bases.

Meaux scored two runs and KC Hass one as pinch runners.

The 29’rs next play at Carencro on Thursday, June 7 at 5 p.m.

Domingue said he believes the 29’rs are ready.

“We may not be as strong as last year,” he said. “But, everybody’s really dedicated... I think we can do what we did last year.”
