Abbeville’s American Legion team, the Gulf Coast Bank 29ers, are up against in the sub regional tournament at UL’s Tigue Moore Field, having lost to the Opelousas Indians 13-3 in eight innings on Saturday morning.

The top-four teams in the six-team tourney reach the state tournament, also at UL, but Abbeville must defeat either Minden, Acadiana or Comeaux, depending on which team moves to the losers’ bracket, to retain a shot at continuing to play.

The 29ers resume action on Sunday at 7:30 p.m. at the “Tigue”.

“It’s been the same problem all year,” said 29ers head coach Andre’ Boudreaux. “We can’t give good teams extra outs.”

14-year-old Luke Hayes got the start for Abbeville on the hill.

Hayes allowed only one base runner through the first two innings on a hit-by-pitch, but did not allow a hit in that stretch.

“The coaches said ‘Just pitch slow. Throw strikes and let the defense do the work,” he said.

In the top of the second inning, 29er Brett Meaux led off with a base hit to right. Peyton Durke followed suit and Brock Clark drew a walk to load the bases. Justin Broussard then took one for the team to drive home the game’s first run.

Opelousas would knot it up at 1-1 in the bottom of the third, however, prompting an Abbeville pitching change.

Peyton Durke came in the game in relief, but Opelousas scratched across another run in the frame to make it 2-1.

In the top of the fourth, Justin Broussard reached on passed ball when he struck out swinging. Broussard then stole second, setting up an R.J. Frederick ripped shot to right for an RBI.

The score remained knotted at 2-2 for a couple of innings, but Opelousas turned it on late, taking advantage of unforced Abbeville errors to end the game on the 10-run rule.

Frederick was 2-for-5 with the one RBI. Durke was 2-for-4 with an RBI and Justin Broussard had an RBI.

Durke got the loss, going 2 2/3 innings, allowing three runs but just one earned.

Ryan Domingue threw one inning, allowing three unearned runs and Justin Broussard surrendered two runs but just one earned.

R.J. Frederick will get the start for Abbeville.
