The 29ers did just enough to qualify for the state tourney in the recent Sub-regional tournament, which was also contested at the Tigue.
Abbeville went 1-2 in its three games two weeks ago to earn a spot in the state tourney.
29ers head coach André Boudreaux said his team is getting in preparatory work for this weekend and will be ready.
“We’re feeling pretty good,” he said, noting a nine-inning scrimmage on Tuesday with the Crowley Millers should help.
Abbeville begins the state tournament against Retif Oil, which is comprised mainly of players from New Orleans’ Jesuit, a perennial powerhouse in high school baseball.
Boudreaux said he knows his team will need to play flawless, error-free baseball in order to compete with the likes of Jesuit.
“We’re going to have to play solid defense and come out there and score a couple of runs,” he said. “We’re going to have to play our best game of the year to compete with (Jesuit).”
Still, it is not like the 29ers do not possess a wealth of talent to bring to the competition.
During the regular season, Abbeville High grad R.J. Frederick led the team at the plate, hitting .552 with a .581 on-base percentage. He had two doubles and three triples while producing eight RBIs and 13 runs.
Frederick was also the team’s ERA leader on the mound. in 17 innings on the hill, he acquired a sparkling 0.53 ERA, giving up just two runs on seven hits.
He struck out 17 batters and walked four.
Recent VC grad Ryan Domingue is also having a successful season with the 29ers.
Domingue hit .458 at in the regular season this year with a .552 on-base percentage. He had three triples and a team-leading 10 RBIs.
At the rubber, Domingue ended the regular season with a 1.15 ERA in 15 2/3 innings of work. He was 2-1, striking out 16 while walking four.
Harvest Time’s Peyton Durke (11 2/3 innings, 2.31 ERA) and Kaplan grad Justin Broussard (7 1/3 innings, 4.91 ERA) also made significant contributions on the hill for the 29ers this season.
At the plate, Abbeville’s Brett Stelly (.308 average) and Peter Broussard of Erath (.261 average, five runs) have helped the 29ers get going offensively, while Harvest Time’s Dustin Waguespack (.190 average) ranks second on the squad with eight runs.
