The Abbeville Police Department arrested Joseph Lawrence Leger Monday for wearing a mask and hood in a public place.

According to Abbeville Police Chief Tony Hardy, Leger approached the Extended End Motel in Abbeville and attempted to open the door. Because his arrival was after the normal closing time for the establishment, the doors were locked and the police were called.

Although people may not know, wearing a hood and or mask in Louisiana is illegal.

“It’s against the law so people can’t just walk on into a motel with a mask on, rob them, and walk out,” said Hardy.

The law is not new, said Hardy. People just may not realize it exists.

Hardy said, although the belief is that Leger was at the motel with the intent to rob, it can not be proved.

“He was pulling on the door while wearing a mask,” said Hardy. “But, he said he was there to collect some dope money.

“I can’t prove he was trying to rob anyone,” he continued.

He, instead, was arrested for the mask and hood wearing.

“The law has been there forever,” Hardy concluded. “That’s why it’s there, though. So you can’t just go into a place with a hood on, walk around and rob them. It’s for the safety of the businesspeople.”
