The Maurice council discussed giving Mayor Wayne Theriot, who took office for his first term in January 2011, a raise during Wednesday’s regular meeting. After some discussion, the council decided to table the matter for discussion later in the year.
Theriot, who wished to point out that he did not request an increase, currently makes $12,000. Alderwoman Phyllis Johnson made a motion during the public hearing portion of the meeting to increase the salary to $22,000.
“I would like to see (the salary) increase to at least $22,000,” Johnson said.
Alderman Darin Desormeaux said he did not feel the number fits at this time.
“I not in favor of adopting the ordinance at this time,” Desormeaux said. “The number presented, I feel, is out of our budget. With the studies that I have been doing, I am closer to the $18,000 mark.”
Alderman Gary Villien made a motion to not accept the
ordinance for $22,000 and revisit it at a later date.
Maurice Police Chief Warren Rost, who last month received a raise from the council, said he is in favor of some increase for the mayor.
“I know a lot of the public don’t see the day-to-day activity,” Rost said. “I do because I live directly next door to (city hall). There are a lot of things in this building that have changed. He’s digital. He rides (village) every morning, every single morning and checks out the village. I have received positive comments on his performance. I know others have.
“I will tell you that he has done an excellent job since he has been here and increased the effectiveness of the office.”
Desormeaux agreed.
“The operations of the village are definitely improving,” Desormeaux said. “We see an increase in efficiency.
“I would like to give this a couple of months and look at it at the end of the year to see where the budget is.”
