Golf carts can now be driven in Palmetto Island State Park.

Gov. Bobby Jindal signed into law Senate Bill No. 483, authored by Sen. Jonathan Perry.

The roads in Palmetto Island State Park are considered state highways and golf carts are not allowed to be driven on state highways.

Now, golf carts can be operated between sunrise and sunset on roadways within the boundaries of Palmetto Island State Park by anyone who is in possession of a valid driver’s license and has liability insurance.

Campers use the golf carts to get around the park instead of taking their vehicles.

Palmetto Island State Park, located south of Abbeville, has 96 camp sites and six cabins to rent. There are also canoe rentals available and a water splash park. Canoe rental is $20 per day or $5 per hour.

The water playground operates from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily.

The cost to get into the park is $1 per day. It is free to senior citizens (older than 62).
