Abbeville—A memorial mass will be held at St Mary Magdalen Catholic Church at 1:00 p.m. on June 23, 2012 for Roland “Prof” Broussard, age 91. He passed away at 2:10 p.m. on April 25, 2012.

Mr. Broussard was a teacher in Vermilion Parish for many years. After completing work for a Bachelors degree at LSU in May 1940, he taught for two years at Meaux High School. At the outbreak of World War II, he joined the U.S. Navy. After completing studies at Columbia University, in New York City, he served as a Lieutenant aboard ship in the South Pacific, mostly in the Guadalcanal area.

Following his Navy service he returned to his teaching career. He taught at Forked Island, Eaton Park, Abbeville Jr. High and Henry High School. After teaching 36 years he retired in June 1980. He then taught for 11 more years as a substitute teacher in Henry, Abbeville Jr. High, FIEB and Rene Rost Jr. High in Kaplan.

In December 2010 he was honored as a living legend of Vermilion Parish as an outstanding educator. “Prof” as he was known, was a man that people would go to in order to get things done for the Cajun culture or community.

Mr. Broussard was preceded in death by his parents, Remy Broussard and Lucille Brien Broussard; a brother, Francis Remy Broussard and a sister, Sarah Lucille Broussard.

He is survived by his niece, Patricia Broussard Walker and her husband Joel and his great niece, Camille Walker Chapman and her husband Tim.
