SLEMCO is now accepting applications for 20 college scholarships -- each worth $2,000 -- to be awarded in a random drawing at the electric cooperative’s annual membership meeting Saturday, June 2, 2012 in Lafayette.

SLEMCO members and their dependent children are eligible to enter. If a dependent, the student must remain under age 24 during 2012. This is due to IRS requirements.

The scholarships can be used in pursuit of any undergraduate degree from any public university in the state. Public community colleges whose credits transfer to four-year universities are included in eligible schools. An example of this type of school would be Southwest Louisiana Community College (SLCC) in Lafayette.

Anyone wishing to participate in the drawing in June must pre-apply in order to do so. Applications can be found in every February or March SLEMCO bill. They can also be printed from the company Web site at www.slemco.com and mailed in, filled out electronically online at our Web site and e-mailed in, or picked up from any high school guidance counselor. The ULL and LSU – E scholarship offices will also have a supply of applications. Individuals must have a 2.0 or “C” average to enter.

The deadline to apply for the drawing is May 3, 2012. Any applications received after the deadline will be discarded.

The scholarships awarded must be used during the 2011-2012 school year so applicants must be at least a senior in high school. SLEMCO members returning to school

or those going to college for the first time are also eligible to enter.

A complete list of eligibility requirements is contained on the application form. If you have any questions, call SLEMCO at 896-5384.

Since SLEMCO began awarding college scholarships in 1992, some 402 students have won scholarships totaling $804,000.
