Two of those teams can take big steps Tuesday night. One, the Vermilion Catholic Lady Eagles, has the controls in its district, while another, the Kaplan Lady Pirates, will try to keep hope alive.
The Lady Eagles will travel to Gueydan Tuesday evening to square off with the Honey Bears, who fell 56-34 Saturday to Central Catholic of Morgan City. Gueydan’s loss puts the Lady Eagles (14-11, 5-1) as the district’s lone one-loss team.
“We control our own destiny,” VC head coach Kim Guidry said.
That is true. The Lady Eagles have two games this week. Including tonight’s clash in Gueydan, the Lady Eagles will travel Friday to Franklin to face Hanson Memorial. Win both of those and the 7-1A title belongs to VC.
It’s a simple enough equation, right? Yes, but not nearly as easy to attain, according to Guidry.
“We’ve got two tough games left,” Guidry said. “We have to go to Gueydan and then Franklin to play Hanson. Both of those places are never easy games.”
Added to the mix is the Honey Bears’ expected sense of urgency. With only two district losses, the Honey Bears are still in the mix for the 7-1A crown.
“Their backs are against he wall,” Guidry said. “I think we are going to see their best effort tonight.
“We have to be ready.”
The Kaplan Lady Pirates will be up for their showdown with No. 3 Notre Dame, according to their coach.
“I think our girls are definitely ready,” Kaplan head coach Danielle Greene said. “I feel confident with us playing on our home court.
“The girls feel that and I think they are going to be ready to step up.”
The Lady Pios (24-3, 7-1) defeated Kaplan 59-39 on Jan. 21 in Crowley. Greene said the key is to learn from that loss.
“We’ve working hard at practice on some things they did last time,” Greene said.
If the Lady Pirates can bounce back from their only loss in their last six games, they will put themselves in a good spot. A win against Notre Dame tonight will put the Lady Pirates, who travel to Abbeville on Friday, in no worse than second place.
“We would lock up second place by ourselves,” Greene said, “and if we beat Notre Dame and then Abbeville, we will tie for the district title.
“This is a big game tonight.”
