Landry will be wearing a blue sports coat while he hangs around the Abbeville High bench during the basketball game.
When you see Landry in the blue coat, do not think he switched teams. Landry, an Abbeville High graduate, bleeds red, grey and white - Abbeville High colors.
But tonight he will be serving a different role in tonight’s 8 p.m. basketball game.
Game tickets are on sale today until 3 p.m. at the school. The price is $10.
Landry was in his blue sports coat Wednesday selling tickets at Abbeville High. From school he was heading to the Cajundome because the Top 28 tipped off Wednesday.
For the last 14 years Landry has been a part of the Top 28 Blue Coat Committee, whose members welcome each basketball team.
Each team is assigned a member of the Blue Coast Committee. Last year, Landry oversaw Vidalia’s needs, the team that beat AHS in the Top 28. However, Landry was an assistant principal at North Vermilion High School at the time.
This year, he is wearing an AHS hat, so the Blue Coat Committee assigned Landry to Abbeville High School.
According to Landry, this is the first time in the 14 years the Top 28 has been in Lafayette that a Blue Coat Committee member, who is also a principal at the school, will be a host for the school.
“I’m excited,” said Landry. “I have done it for so long and had great teams. I’m honored to be host for Abbeville.”
This morning the Wildcats practice in the Cajundome at 10:30 a.m. Landry will ride on the bus with the team to Lafayette. He, and two other committee members, will show the Wildcats where to go and when to go there. After practice, the team and Landry will go eat at Don’s Restaurant in downtown Abbeville.
Then they will return to Abbeville for the rest of the afternoon. When the team arrives back at the Cajundome tonight, Landry will be there to greet them and escort them around the Dome.
If they win tonight, he will do it all over again on Sunday for the finals at 3 p.m.
“We try to make their (teams) trip to Lafayette special,” he said.
It will be extra special for Landry and the Wildcats to win on Sunday.
