CROWLEY – Police have identified the teenager in Saturday evening’s drowning in Bayou Plaquemine near Estherwood as Thomas Grantham, 17, of Oakdale.

Acadia Parish Sheriff Wayne Melancon said Grantham went swimming in the bayou with friends and was reportedly about 20 feet from shore when witnesses reported he went under but did not resurface.

Bayou Plaquemine branches off the Mermentau river in the southwest corner of Acadia Parish, meandering northeast.

The search for Grantham began as soon as the sheriff’s office was notified of the victim’s disappearance at 5:33 p.m. Saturday, Melancon said.

At about 6:45 p.m., Grantham’s body was recovered following a search by deputies, assisted by the Jennings Fire Department Dive Team and agents of the state Department of Wildlife and Fisheries.

Melancon said the victim’s body was transported to the Calcasieu Parish Coroner’s Office for an autopsy to determine the cause of death.

Also assisting with search and recovery efforts were the Mermentau and Estherwood fire departments, as well as officers with the Morse and Estherwood police departments, and Acadian Ambulance Service paramedics.
