The Cowboys golf team won its first tournament since 2006 this week.
The two Cowboys shot identical two over par rounds of 74 on Monday to tie for fourth place individually and lead McNeese to a two shot victory in the two day, 36 hole tournament.
North Vermilion grad Mick Huffman, the Cowboy leader after the first round, shot a 77 on Monday and tied for seventh place at 151.
It was the first team title for McNeese since the 2006 season when the Cowboys won their own Moe O'Brien Invitational at Gray Plantation as well as the Centenary Fall Classic.
McNeese followed up Sunday's team total of 302 with another 302 for a 604 score. Georgia Southwestern finished second at 606 and was followed by Savannah State at 609, Jackson State 610 and UT Martin 603.
Other team scoring in the 14 team field had Bethune Cookman at 618, Florida A&M and Texas Pan American at 628, IPFW 637, Southern Illinois 651, Illinois-Springfield 652, Christian Brothers 663, MD Eastern Shore 669 and Talladega College 716.
“We won but we didn't finish well,” said Cowboy coach Neel DeRouen. “We played good the first nine and were four or five over as a team then but we had trouble finishing again. That's something that we are going to be working on.”
The 7,128 yard Dancing Rabbit golf course played tough both days, being wet with strong winds. However, Monday's wind was not as strong as Sunday's.
Halsell and Sweeney both finished at 149 to tie for fourth place, only two shots in back of the winning 147 totals posted by J. P. Griffin of Georgia Southwestern and Brendon Caballero of UT Martin.
Other scoring for McNeese had Ben Suarez shooting a 77 for a 157 and a tie for 25th and Kendall Magee posting an 82 for a 160 and a tie for 30th place.
The Cowboys will now take a break, not returning to action until the Carter Plantation Intercollegiate March 19-20.
