Maltrait Memorial Catholic School’s 5th–8th grade students participated in the poetry division of the Acadiana Reading Council’s Young Author’s Contest. The following students placed 1st at the school level. 5th grade- Emily Faulk, “My Dad”, 6th grade- Ethan Zaunbrecher, “That September Day”, 7th grade- Jessica Jarred, “Freedom Fighters”, and 8th grade- Taryn Trahan, “America’s Disaster.” Their poems were sent to compete with other 1st place poetry winners within the Lafayette Diocese, where they placed 1st there as well. All four poems moved on to compete against all 1st place public school winners from Vermilion, Acadia, Lafayette, and Iberia parishes. Emily and Ethan placed 3rd, and Jessica and Taryn placed 2nd at that level.
