Bobcats head coach David Jordan did not mince words after the defeat.
“I’m disappointed,” he said. “I want these kids to understand that we’re not the old Erath. The old Erath was content to lose 7-5. I want these guys to overcome that.
“If we continue to settle for mediocrity, that’s what we’ll be.”
Kevin Guilbeaux got the start for Erath on the hill, but was pulled in the second inning in favor of lefty Ross Granger, who in turn was replaced by Jace Harrington in the third inning.
Harrington would retire three-straight in the third to get the Bobcats out of a jam, ultimately staying on the hill for 4 1/3 innings, allowing five hits and no earned runs while striking out three and walking one.
The Bobcats were down 2-0 in the second, when EHS’ Coy Clostio hit the first of his two homers on the day. The solo shot made it 2-1 after two innings.
Berwick strung together hits and walks in the third, though, while benefitting from a couple of costly Bobcat errors to take a 5-1 advantage.
Berwick eventually took a 7-1 lead in the fifth, but Bobcat Peter Broussard drove in Cole Bourque from second in the bottom of the frame to get within shouting distance at 7-2.
Clostio’s second dinger came in the sixth and was of the two-run variety, making it 7-4.
With the score still 7-4, Broussard stretched a single into a double and scored on a Brett Delcambre wounded quail in the final frame to make it 7-5.
Erath would load the bases back up without getting another hit, but Berwick starting pitcher got a strikeout to get out of town with a complete-game win.
Jordan said that, though the umpire had a wide strike zone, it was consistent.
“The things that cost us the ball game are things we work on every day,” he said. “I can understand us getting punched out early. But, then you have to learn.”
Clostio was 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Delcambre went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Broussard was 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI.
Erath (6-9, 0-1) will get another shot at Berwick (12-5, 0-1) on Tuesday, but this time the Bobcats are on the road.
