After earning a number-two seed in the playoffs with a sparkling 25-6 record this season, VC’s Eagles will start the postseason at home hosting number-31 Oberlin Thursday at 5 p.m.

As champions of District 5-1A, Oberlin head coach Jordan Smith said he finds his team’s ranking puzzling.

“I really don’t feel like our seeding reflects our team’s record (13-15, 9-0)” he said. “There’s some teams seeded ahead of us that we beat handily... It seems a lot of teams seeded ahead of us have played 5A and 4A schools and got points... We played some good 1A and 2A schools... We feel like we’re way better than a 31 seed.”

Smith said he will put his dominant junior right hander Mark Fontenot on the hill Thursday. Fontenot, who incidentally sports a 4.0 GPA, has a 9-3 record (5-0 in district) and a 2.4 ERA.

Smith said Fontenot is a lock for college.

VC head coach Danny McMurtry said he will throw senior lefty Ryan David to battle Fontenot.

In 12 games, Ryan is 6-1 with a 3.77 ERA. He has struck out 40 batters and walked 25. He is also batting .340 with two doubles, two triples and 25 runs scored.

McMurtry said senior Mark LaPorte is getting healthier with each stint on the mound.

“He’s done well in the short outings his had,” said McMurtry. “If we stay in it, he’s going to get a start. Hopefully he’ll get that opportunity.”

Oberlin, a relatively young squad, has one senior and three junior starters.

One of the seniors, Markeith Guillory, plays second base and pitches. Smith said that, before a broken thumb threatened to derail his season, Guillory was batting .500.

Oberlin freshman Edmond Fontenot is batting .520 with 30 RBIs, while the pitcher Fontenot is batting a remarkable .650.

The Eagles are batting .301 as a team.

Leading in individual batting average for VC with a .417 is senior second baseman Blair Landry, who is also sporting a .919 fielding percentage.

Landry has six doubles, a triple, five home runs and 26 RBIs on the year. He is second on the team with 36 runs scored.

The leader in runs scored for VC is third baseman Etienne Trahan, with 38. Trahan is batting .323 with six doubles, a triple, three home runs and 24 RBIs.

Senior catcher Aaron David is batting .327 with eight doubles and 21 RBIs and senior pitcher/infielder Ryan Domingues is hitting .305 with five double, four home runs and 25 RBIs.

“The guys have been playing well lately,” said McMurtry of his squad. He also said he felt his team had a distinct advantage playing at home in the first round.

“Any time you can host a playoff game you have a huge advantage,” he said. “Hopefully, we can get a good crowd and our guys can take advantage of it.”
