Though they put up four hits and had the bases loaded in the sixth inning, the Lady Pirates (25-6, 11-1) simply could not push a run across the plate.
Iowa (23-6, 8-2) put up a two-spot in the fifth inning to take its only lead of the game.
Mallory Hebert and freshman catcher Kailey reached on hits in the sixth and Brittany LeBeouf reached on a walk that loaded the bases.
Bailey Prejean and Ranase Frederick each had chances to drive home runs in the sixth inning, but Prejean’s bunt attempt turned into an easy out and Frederick drove a deep shot to the outfield that was caught to retire the side with Iowa unscathed.
Kaplan head coach Shay Herpin said, after the game, that it was just an unfortunate break that neither hitter’s shot resulted in game-tying or go-ahead runs. He said he kids played hard, but just could not get the timely hits he has spoken of so often throughout the course of the 2012 season.
Iowa starting pitcher Samantha Buller said she knew she would get out of the jam.
“You breathe and you relax and you come back and just think that nobody is on base and get the outs,” Buller said.
Kaplan’s senior starting pitcher LeBeouf went all six innings in the circle in her final game as a Lady Pirate.
She allowed five hits and three earned runs while walking six Iowa batters and striking out three in the loss.
Buller pitched seven innings, allowing four hits and walking one while striking out eight Lady Pirates.
Hebert was 2-for-3, Katie LeDoux was 1-for-3 and Kailey LeJeune went 1-for-2.
Iowa’s Buller was 1-for-3 with a double and Kasey McCauley was 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI.
Iowa went on to play Parkview Baptist, which beat NV 4-1 in the quarterfinal game right before the Kaplan-Iowa game, for the right to move on the state title game on Saturday.
