ERATH - Erath resident Edith Granger will be living a dream Sunday when she walks onto the pitcher’s mound of Minute Maid Park and throws out the ceremonial first pitch for the Houston Astros/Texas Ranger Major League baseball game.

“I have not thought about it until now because it is getting close,” said Edith. “I’m getting excited.”

Game time is at 1 p.m. and it will be televised on ESPN.

Edith, who is 86 years old and mother of 11 children, will walk onto the field along side of her son Weldon Granger and hopefully ex-Astros’ Craig Biggio. She will stand about 30 feet from home plate, which is half the distance of the mound to the batter’s box.

Possibly receiving the ball on the other end will be Astros catcher Jason Castro.

Up until the last two weeks, it had been years since Granger threw a baseball. She has been practicing and throwing with her son, Billy, or grandson Gabe Connor, behind her house.

“My biggest fear is throwing the ball out of control,” said Edith on Friday right before she left for Houston. “I hope I don’t hit anyone.”

Weldon, an attorney who lives in Houston, made this possible by winning the first pitch in an auction in a fundraiser for a high school in Houston that Biggio is affiliated with. Weldon had his mother in mind when he was bidding on the traditional first pitch.

“I know she has been Astro fan for a long time,” said Weldon. “I knew this would make her happy.”

She has been watching the Astros for the last 30 years. This will be her first time in Minute Maid Park. She was familiar with the AstroDome, but not the new park.

If throwing out the first pitch with 40,000 fans watching is not exciting enough, having Biggio along her side will be make it even more exciting. There is a 50 percent chance Biggio will be at the game and if he is there, he will walk her out onto the field.

“I’ll be happy to meet him,” she said. “I never thought I’d ever get a chance to meet Craig Biggio. He was my favorite player.”

She is also bringing her own fans to the game. With 11 children, all 11 will be in the stands along with their family. Close to 100 people from the Granger family will be cheering on Edith.

“I’m happy to have everyone there,” said Edith.

She, her husband and their children: Harris, Weldon, Leona Garmendia, Neil, Janice Granger, Tommy, Lottie Delgarza, Tommy, Lottie Degarza, Joey, Patrick, Billy and Tammy Connor.
