What a good way for long-time Meaux Elementary Principal Charles Robichaux to retire - to go out on top.

Since 1983, Robichaux has been the principal at Meaux Elementary.

After 50 years in education, the 73-year-old Robichaux is retiring in June.

The state released LEAP scores Wednesday, and based on the fourth grade LEAP scores, Meaux Elementary scores were the highest in Vermilion Parish.

For LEAP, fourth grade students have to take four different tests - in English, Math, Science and Social Studies.

They are scored Advanced, Mastery, Basic, Approaching Basic and Unsatisfactory.

The goal for each elementary school is to have as many students score Advanced, Mastery or Basic, which is considered passing.

Meaux Elementary is the only elementary school in the parish that averaged 93 percent of its students passed LEAP in all subjects.

In English, 98 percent of all Meaux Elementary students scored either Basic, Mastery or Advanced.

In other subjects, 91 percent of Meaux Elementary students passed Social Studies, 90 percent Math and 93 percent Science.

“We are very pleased with the scores,” said Robichaux. “We have a good staff and students who want to learn.”

While Meaux Elementary can brag, the two other elementary schools in the northern part of the parish also did extremely well.

Cecil Picard Elementary passed 90 percent of its students, while 88 percent of Indian Bayou students passed.

Cecil Picard passed 92 percent in English, 92 percent in Math, 87 in Science and Social Studies.

Indian Bayou Elementary had an amazing 97 percent pass Math, plus an 87 in Science, 86 in English and 83 in Social Students.

The school with the second best Fourth Grade LEAP scores does not belong to a score in the northern or eastern part of the parish. Nope. This year Seventh Ward Elementary just missed overtaking Meaux Elementary.

Seventh Ward had an average 91 percent of its student pass the LEAP. They did well in Social Students (93 percent), Math (94 percent) and English (93 percent). The one subject that prevented Seventh Ward from being the top school was Science. The school had 83 percent of its student pass the subject.

Here are how other parish elementary schools did in Fourth Grade LEAP Scores.

• Dozier Elementary (88 percent passed Social Studies), (79 percent passed Math), (86 percent passed Science) (92 percent passed English)

• Jessie Owens (70 percent passed Social Studies), (94 percent passed Math), (77 percent passed Science) and (92 percent passed English)
