The Abbeville 29’rs, Vermilion Parish’s American Legion baseball team, are set to begin their season Monday, June 4, at Faubacher Field in Lafayette against the Arc Angels.

First pitch is set for 6 p.m.

The 29’rs appear to have settled what had been looming questions as to whether the team would have enough players to meet the American Legion’s requirements for roster numbers.

“There’s so many summer leagues the guys can play in these days, it seems like everyone’s putting American Legion second,” said 29’rs head coach Andre Boudreaux.

Former Erath standout Mikey Seymour, who had been practicing with the 29’rs in preparation to play this season, learned recently that he is too old to play. Former Abbeville High player and All-Stater R.J. Frederick, however, remains on the 29’rs roster.

Former Kaplan catcher and current college player Steven Sparkman is also on the team, as is former Kaplan Pirate Justin Broussard.

Some other recent additions to the squad appear to have insured that there will be American Legion baseball in Vermilion Parish in 2012.

“We should have at least 12 guys out there on Monday,” said Boudreaux. “It likes like we’re good to go.”

Boudreaux said he feels his team will be ready to go on Monday, despite taking on new players so late.

“It’s still small numbers,” he said. “But, everybody’s been getting their work in. So, I think we’ll be ready.”

The Arc Angels is a team made up mainly of home-schooled kids from around Acadiana. Most of those players play in the Louisiana Christian School Athletic Association, the same association in which Harvest Time Christian Academy plays.

The 29’rs follow up their game at the Arc Angels on Tuesday, June 4, against Northside. That game will also be at Faubacher Field.
