Abbeville’s American Legion team, the Gulf Coast Bank 29’rs, got off to a solid start at Faubacher Field in Lafayette on Monday, defeating the Arc Angels by an 11-2 margin.

29’rs head coach Andre Broussard said it was nice to get off to a good start, but that he knows tougher games are in the offing.

“I think the competition is going to get a little tougher. They were a really young team,” he said. “I’ve seen Comeaux, Acadiana and STM... But, I’m not sure how many of their regulars will be on the field.”

Peyton Durke got the start on the hill for the 29’rs. He went four innings, giving up just one hit and walking two while striking out six to pick up the win.

Brett Stelly and Peter Broussard also pitched in the later stages of the game.

Stelly gave up two runs on four walks, while Broussard surrendered one hit while striking out three.

“Our starter did well on the mound. He threw strikes,” said coach Broussard. “I was just trying to get (Stelly and Broussard) some work on the mound. They hadn’t thrown any bullpens yet, so I was using that as their bullpen session.”

Abbeville jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second inning and built its lead to 11-0 in the fifth. The Arc Angels cut the lead to 11-2 in the bottom of the fifth, but the game was called due to a two-hour time limit.

“I’m happy where we are being we haven’t had as much work as we’d have liked at this point,” said Broussard. “With the work we’ve had, we played well.”

The 29’rs were set to play their second game against Northside on Tuesday, but that game had yet to be played as of press time.

The 29’rs will next play at Carencro on Thursday, June 7 at 5 p.m. Their first home game will be on June 13 at 5 p.m. when they host STM at Roy Theriot Field in A.A. Comeaux Park in Abbeville.
