Cankton couple charged after child allegedly beaten with extension cord

CANKTON – A woman and her boyfriend are charged with cruelty to her 10-year-old son after he was allegedly beaten about the upper body with an extension cord.

On Thursday, the St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office received a call from a social worker at a Lafayette school in reference to the boy having possibly been abused at his home.

Investigators observed the child had been severely beaten with an extension cord from the top of his body down to his legs. The Office of Child Services was also called in.

According to Sheriff Bobby J. Guidroz investigators learned that this ten year old child lives in Cankton with Iyabo Segun, 30, and her boyfriend Christopher Minix, 28.

Upon interviewing the child it was learned that Minix had whipped him with an extension cord on Wednesday. Investigators arrested Segun and charged her with Principle to Cruelty to a Juvenile and she was booked into the St. Landry Parish Jail. Also Christopher Minix was arrested and charged with Cruelty to a juvenile. The child was placed into the custody of the Office of Child Services.
