More than 450 anglers competed for the $12,588 in cash prizes and four children in the youth division now have lifetime fishing licenses.
Large crowds enjoyed the bands each day and area residents purchased auction items at generous prices.
Co-organizer of the fishing tourney, Carrick Boffy, explained, “We’ll have to pay our expenses before writing the check to the Alzheimer’s Association, but during the auction, we raised more than the $22,000 we were able to give to the Alzheimer’s Association when we started the rodeo in 2009.”
The participants enjoyed the new pavilion built by Abbeville Harbor and Terminal earlier in the year, but the shade was not enough to fight the June heat. During the auction, Sheriff Mike Couvillon pledged to donate the first $1,000 to go towards fans to cool the pavilion next year.
The death of Edmae Boffy, the grandmother of organizer Carrick Boffy, due to Alzheimer’s disease two days before the rodeo motivated the family and volunteer staff.
“The grieving process with death due to Alzheimer’s disease begins when our loved ones forget how to perform daily tasks and intensifies when they forget our names. We were not all able to fly to France for the funeral so we were grateful to spend our weekend raising funds and awareness so that this generation is the last to suffer from the disease,” shared Holly Boffy. Carrick Boffy’s grandfather, Maxie Pierce, died from Alzheimer’s disease in 2006.
Since the conception of the rodeo in 2009, records have been kept. This year, five fishing records fell.
In the Youth Division, Anthony Lanthier, aboard the boat, Git Sum, set a new speckled trout record with a catch of 3.91 pounds. The old record was 2.04 pounds caught in 20009.
Jordan LeBlanc also broke the youth red fish record by more than a pound. Kyle Lemaire, aboard Lady Nell, reeled in a 8.39 pound red drum. The old record was 6.98 pounds set in 2010.
In the adult division, three records dropped.
In the flounder division, Jim Bo Broussard caught a 4.40 pound flounder on the boat, Aint Got Nothing. The old record was 3.22 pounds set in 2011.
Damien Groosie, on board the boat, Reel Epic, hauled in a record-setting 22.5 pound Red Snapper. The old record was 21.52 pounds set in 2009.
The speckled trout record also fell. Kevin Natali, pulled in a 7.36 pound trout, fishing on Git Sum. The old record was 6.6 pounds.
