NATCHITOCHES – Services are pending for former Grambling State All-American and long-time highs school coach J.D. Garrett. He died July 4 at age 74.
After playing football at Grambling, where he was a three-time all-conference fullback, he played five seasons for the Boston Patriots of the American Football League, forerunner of the New England Patriots. He was also drafted by the New York Giants.
He coached at Central High and Natchitoches Central High and was a police juror.
Arrangements are pending.
CPA, civic leader
BATON ROUGE – Services will be Saturday for CPA and civic leader Thomas Frazer. He died July 4 at age 66.
He was founder and partner of Frazer and Perzac, a financial planner, and served on the board of several firms including Helix Biomedix. He had been treasurer of Pennington Biomedical Research Foundation and vice chairman of the Baton Rouge Area Foundation. He was a member of the LSU System Research and Technology Foundation.
Survivors include his wife Lynnette, two sons and a daughter.
Retired journalist
MONROE – Services for retired U.S. Army officer and journalist Richard Tyler will be Saturday. He died July 1 at age 78.
After retiring from the Army, Tyler worked for the Monroe News Start as an editor, reporter and writer.
Survivors include two sons, two daughters and a step-son.
Arrangements are by Mulhearn.
Former Tulane department chairman
NEW ORLEANS – Services for long-time opthamologist Dr. Monte Holland, Jr. will be Saturday. He died July 4 at ae 83.
He was on the faculty of Tulane Medical School for 20 years, eventually becoming chairman of the Department of Ophthamology before entering private practice. He also was an attorney.
Survivors include his wife Mary and a daughter.
