Traffic heading south and north on South State Street near Eaton Park Elementary in Abbeville, had to be rerouted due to a two-car accident that injured one.

The accident occurred at 3 p.m. Monday afternoon and one person was brought to a local hospital as a result of the accident.

Maurice Meaux, of Mouton Cove, was heading south on South State when he approached the intersection of Dollie Marie and South State Street.

Meaux said he saw someone mowing on his right side and thought the mower may come out on the street, so he was keeping an eye on the mower. Then, he looked up, and saw the vehicle in front of him put on its breaks and came to a stop.

Meaux plowed into the back of the Ford Escort that was stopped. The driver of the Escort had to be removed from the vehicle by Abbeville firemen and then loaded into Acadian Ambulance on a stretcher. The driver’s name was not known at press time.

There was a passenger in the Escort, who was not injured.

Meaux was not injured, but he did receive a traffic citation by the Abbeville Police Department.
