St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, located in downtown Abbeville, is focusing its Summer/Fall Outreach effort on collecting school supplies during the 2012/13 school year.

This project will take place in two separate steps.

Initially, St. Paul’s will purchase and stuff 200 backpacks with supplies needed by students for the beginning of the school year. These 200 stuffed backpacks are the seed for the outreach program. The backpacks will be donated to the Vermilion Parish School Board on Aug. 20. The school board will then distribute the backpacks to students of need in targeted Vermlion Parish schools.

St. Paul’s will then partner with the United Way to spearhead a “Stuff the Bus” school supply collection effort on Saturday, Aug. 18 This complements the efforts of some of the other Abbeville churches in the Ministerial Alliance and attempted to establish a school supply “bank” for the rest of the upcoming school year.

In a prepared statement, the United Way recognized that “For many low income families, the pressing need for food and shelter can often overshadow other seemingly smaller needs such as school supplies. The ‘Stuff the Bus’ school supply drive aims to help families continue to prioritize the precious gift of education for their children by equipping students with the tools they need to learn and be successful in school. Having school supplies is vital to a child’s educational success, and we ask that you join us in our efforts to equip local students with the ‘write’ stuff.”

Donations of school supplies, cash, or checks will be accepted on Saturday, Aug. 18, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church at 100 W. Vermilion St., on the corner of Vermilion Street and North State Street. Volunteers will be available to take donations and provide a receipt for cash donations. Donations can also be made in the form of a Pay Pal account at St. Paul’s Web site (www.StPaulsAbbeville.com).

The list of new supplies that will be collected includes pencils, pens, crayons, markers, glue, spiral notebooks, loose-leaf paper, scissors, colored pencils, folders, pencil boxes or bags, highlighters, rulers, erasers, colored markers, facial tissue, hand sanitizer, paper towels, and clear or mesh backpacks.

Educational supplies will be brought to the Vermilion Parish School Board on Aug. 20 for distribution throughout the semester and year.
