Vermilion Catholic principal Mike Guilbeaux did not say what is the fate of newly promoted head football coach Richard “Roch” Charpentier after he received a Drunk While Driving (DWI) ticket late Tuesday night in Abbeville.

Charpentier, 26, was stopped by the Abbeville Police Department at 11:15 p.m. on Tuesday. Charpentier was stopped on South Miles Street.

His alcohol level tested .12, and the legal limit is anything below .08. His car had to be towed away by a wrecker. His was also given a ticket for an open container violation.

His bond was set at $2,000 ($1,500 for DWI and $500 for open container) for both tickets. According to the arrest report, he bonded out that night.

Guilbeaux said on Wednesday he was aware of Charpentier’s situation, and he was doing an internal investigation of what occurred. Before he announced the status of Charpentier for the upcoming football season, which begins in two weeks with a jamboree, he wanted to speak to others about the incident. Guilbeaux said he expects to make a decision by Thursday or Friday on Charpentier’s status with VC.

Charpentier was named the head football coach over the summer after then head coach Trev Faulk left VC for the head football job at Northside High School in Lafayette.

Before being promoted, Charpentier was VC’s offensive coordinator all of last year. He helped the Eagles to a 13-1 record, including one-game short of the Superdome.

The regular season begins Aug. 31. VC is scheduled to play North Vermilion.

DWI and Open Container - So if he didn't have a winning record he would have been fired already?

I wonder what he was doing on S. Miles that late at night? Not the best area to get caught up in. Kind of sets a bad example for the children he is supposed to be mentoring.
