It’s been a fast-paced summer for Russel Kuhns, who has been named interim head coach of the Eagles just a month after being hired as the assistant coach and defensive coordinator.
The school placed him on administrative leave. VC principal Mike Gilbeaux said there are certain requirements Charpentier must meet before he will be allowed to return. The school is not ready to say if he will be back for next season. “We’re just not ready to speculate on that. It’s a very personal thing,” Gilbeaux said.
Gilbeaux, who has been in education for more than three decades, says he has not had to deal with a situation like this before, but did note that the community was still supportive of Charpentier.
Charpentier was named to the head coaching job this summer after the departure of former coach Trev Faulk to Northside High School in Lafayette.
Kuhns was a star fullback and linebacker at Wisconsin and was hired by Charpentier in July to be the defensive coordinator. The two worked together during Charpentier’s time at Henderson State, where Kuhns was his strength and conditioning coach.
When asked if the team would be able to adapt to the sudden change so close to the season, Kuhns voiced his faith in the squad.
“I don’t think they’ll miss a beat,” he said. “They’re already stepping up.”
Kuhns said he and Charpentier had been on the same page before the incident and he is not going to be making any big changes to the team and the style of play.
The team is practicing, despite the situation, and team leaders are still as helpful as ever, according to Kuhns. The boys will play in an Opelousas jamboree in two weeks.
