WRIGHT - Another local landmark and a piece of our local history is being torn down this week.

The Hair Brothers Rice Dryer with the famous “If you lived in Wright you would be home now” sign has been a landmark, a subject of a conversation and has been used to give traveling directions for over four decades. Due to the age of the building it is time to tear it down.

The Dryer was build by the Hair brothers of Wright. Walton, William and Vernon Hair were rice farmer from the time they could drive a tractor until they retired. The brothers are all deceased now and the farms are run by the next generation of farmers.

You will still be able to gage yourself on how far you are from Kaplan or Gueydan because the sign will be moved over to the next building, and is still visible to traffic that passes on La. 14.

Speaking about the sign “People enjoy seeing it,” said Mildred Hair. And it has become part of Wright.”

In this case only part of history will be gone and the other part only moved.
