ERATH - It is no mistake Ariana Lyons, a 20-year-old from Erath, has musical talent. After all, music runs deep on both sides of the Lyons’ family.

Her mother Melondy Lasalle Lyons and Melondy’s sisters chased the music dream right after high school by forming a group called the “LaSalle Sisters.” They cut an album in Lake Charles when they were young.

Ariana’s father Dale Lyons, from Kaplan, has played the guitar and base guitar since he was 12 years old.

The bloodline goes further back than one generation. Ariana’s grandfather, “Pee Wee” Lyons played the steel guitar players. Dewey Segura, her great grand father, played the accordion. Ariana’s grandmother, Melondy’s mother, had a solid voice and enjoyed entertaining many with it. She was offered to sing with an orchestra when she 13 years old, but her father said no.

She taught her daughters Melondy, Shannon, Drucie and Starr (the baby) how to sang. Her sons, Rick and Tim LaSalle, played keyboard and trumpet with the band LaSalle.

Because of a family musical tradition, it’s no fluke Ariana has singing talent, and she hopes to use her talent to make a living at singing.

Ariana, who first sang when she was two years old, has plans to make it in the tough singing world by entering talent shows - local and national shows.

She’s tried out singing on American Idol and the X-Factor TV shows. Unfortunately, she’s never made the cut to be on TV.

But that has not stopped her for chasing her dream of being a singer on the national level.

Recently, Ariana competed in the Acadiana Texas Country Showdown at a country and western club in Lafayette, She took first place and will now moves on the state competition on Oct. 13 in Logansport.

Ariana’s winning song was country and western singer Martina McBride’s song, “Broken Wings.”

“I was surprised I won,” Ariana said. “I know I put it out there.”

With her musical background, she said she feeds off her family’s musical heritage. “I know they (LaSalle sisters) did not become famous but they kept trying. What they did shows me I want to do the same thing.”

While singing is her passion, she also enjoys writing and performing her own music.

Her parents are Ariana’s biggest supporters and they encourage her to enter as many singing contests as possible. “I am proud of her,” said Melondy. “I encourage her to go after her dream.”
