Emergency food stamps applications taken in Abbeville today

ABBEVILLE - The Disaster Food Stamp Program begins this morning at St. Theresa Catholic Church’s Holy Family Center for those who lost food during Hurricane Gustav and are not already on food stamps.

From 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., applications will be accepted by workers from the Department of Social Services.

The Holy Family Center is located on Charity Street in Abbeville. For more information call, 893-5930.

Applicants should bring a picture ID, name, date of birth and Social Security card number for all household members living in your house as of Aug. 29, 2008.

Also needed is proof of residency like an electric or water bill.

The Disaster Food Stamp Program is a federal emergency food assistance program that was created for residents who are in need of immediate food assistance as a result of Hurricane Gustov.

According to the Department of Social Services, if you already receive food stamps, you are not eligible for Disaster Food Stamp Program. Supplemental benefits will be added to your EBT card between Sept. 8-12.

Here is the amount that will be added based on the household size.

One person - $162

Two people - $298

Three people - $426

Four people - $542

Five people - $643

Seven people - $853

Eight people - $975

Each additional member is $122.
