In December of 2008, Vermilion Parish was rocking and rolling with an unemployment rate of 3.5 percent, one of the lowest in the state. Close to 23,000 people were working in the parish and only 833 were unemployed.
Today, those numbers are still positive compared to the rest of the state, but not as positive as a year ago.
Unemployment has risen in the parish from 3.5 percent to 5 percent or about 350 more unemployment claims were filed.
“A majority of it is seasonal jobs,” said Diane Babin, Vermilion Parish’s manager of Career Solutions. “There have been construction labor jobs lost.” When a person is unemployed in Vermilion Parish, there is no longer an unemployment office.
The person has o apply either on line (www.laworks.net) or call 1-866-783-5567. They also have to register at their local Career Solutions Office. Vermilion’s office is located in the media center at the Louisiana Technical College in Abbeville.
An unemployed person is able to update his or her resume at Career Solutions and then the resume is posted online.
It is the third month in a row unemployment has been on the rise in the parish. In November, it was 4.8 percent.
Vermilion Parish’s unemployment is on par with other Acadiana parishes.
Lafayette Parish has the lowest in the state at 3.6 percent. Iberia Parish is 4.6 percent, while Acadian Parish is 4.7 percent. Cameron Parish is 4.8 percent.
The state average is 5.5 percent, while the national average is 7.1 percent.
