Yuletide has first-round shockers

The first day of the Yuletide Basketball Tournament at VC had its share of upsets on Saturday.

The three biggest were the Erath Lady Bobcats shocking Marksville 44-42 in overtime, Delcambre girls nipping Acadiana High 32-25 and Abbeville girls holding off Carencro 42-38.

The VC Lady Eagles cruised to a 51-21 victory over Loreauville.

The Abbeville Lady Wildcats came into the game with an impressive 9-5 record, while Carencro, a 5-A school, was 14-2.

Behind the second half scoring of Darrian Gaspard, who scored 10, AHS took the victory. Kiara Levine had 11, while Rachelle Bessard provided the spark for Abbeville in the first half. She scored 10 of her 14 points in the first half.

Jasmine Dozier had a big three-pointer in the fourth period. Wayna Briggs and Ashantae Thibodeaux each had two for AHS.

Abbeville plays Erath Monday at 2:30 p.m. in the second round.

Marksville.........42 (overtime)

In the Erath win, the Lady Bobcats won it at the free throw line, making 12 of 19. Kasey Landry led EHS with 16 points, including a five of six performance at the line. Courtney Brasseux had 11 points.

Tori Moss came off the bench for EHS and scored a career-high six points. Taylor Desormeaux had four, while Jessie Bouillon and Hailey Landry each had three points. Megan Norris added one point.

Erath, winners of four straight, meets Abbeville Monday at 2:30 in the second round.

Delcambre girls........32

Acadiana..................25

Jaci Trahan and Jenny Bouillion combined for 26 of Delcambre’s 32 points in the win. Trahan had 14, while Bouillion added 12. Tailor Broussard was Delcambre’s other scorer with six points.

Hanson faces Delcambre Monday at 4 p.m. in the next round.

Loreauville.......50

Gueydan...........32

Joseph Dressel scored 27 points to lead Loreauville over Gueydan 50-32 in the first round of the Yuletide Tourney on Saturday.

Greg Verret had 15 and Cade Gaspard added nine for Gueydan.

Catholic High.......59

Kaplan..................56

The Catholic High Panthers got 23 points from Derek Gaspard in the win over Kaplan.

Jalen Baker had 14, while Keegan Boudreaux added 11 for Kaplan. Marc Constable scored 13 of his 15 points in the first half for KHS.

KHS will play Hanson at 10 a.m. on Monday.

Elton.......................70

North Vermilion.....51

Elton, a new comer to the tournament, jumped on North Vermilion 30-13 in the first half and the Patriots could never recover.

Ben James led NV with 26 points and Jabian Kern had eight.
