The Gueydan Garden Club, with 14 members, enlisted the help of the community and city workers to earn this year’s Cleanest City competition for Division B sized communities. This year, the competition was against Washington, LA in the semi-final round.
Leliah Jones is chairman of the Garden Club and spoke how everything in the city came together to make the town shine. “The contest makes everyone have pride,” said Jones, which is the same thing the mayor of Gueydan said in 1959. “Mayor R. C. Breaux emphasized the fine cooperation exhibited by all of the city. There’s no reason with the community spirit and civic pride as to why Gueydan shouldn’t win the state award next year.” The quote is from the Abbeville Meridional June 4, 1959.
Gueydan did win the state title 18 years ago and through the years has had the help from the area Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and 4-H clubs.
