Three Kaplan women were recognized for their work with Hospice of Acadiana in Vermilion Parish.

Louella Touchet, Chris Fuselier and Leta Touchet were awarded pins for their service during the annual volunteer staff and appreciation banquet.

Hospice volunteers are a group of dedicated individuals from throughout a seven-parish service area (Acadia, Iberia, Evangeline, Jeff Davis, Lafayette, St. Landry, St. Martin, St. Mary, and Vermilion) who share with Hospice of Acadiana a belief in the right of each person to spend one’s final days in peace and comfort and to die with dignity at home.

Louella has been a volunteer for 10 years.

“After my husband died, I wanted to do something helpful with my time,” she said. “My sister told me about Hospice and I decided to give it a try. That was 10 years ago.”

Leta first experienced Hospice of Acadiana when they were caring for her husband.

“They took such good care of my husband,” said Leta, “that I wanted to repay the wonderful help I received from them. He was not an easy patient, but their compassionate care and patience in dealing with him were unbelievable.”

She was acknowledged for her five years of service.

Chris discovered the organization when she attended a bereavement class after the death of her husband.

“My husband died from a heart attack,” said Fuselier. “I had trouble coping with his sudden death and heard about a class dealing with grief. That class was hosted by Hospice of Acadiana. By the time the class was finished, I knew that volunteering was the answer.”

All three agree that they feel blessed when they are able to help a family.

“Sometimes we stay with a patient,” said Chris, “and sometimes we are there to help with the family. Whatever is needed, we step in and lend a hand.”

All three are no strangers to volunteering their time. They are members of the Vermilion Volunteers for Family and Community, Inc.

This organization’s goal is to provide information and educational leadership in family, environment and leadership to the public.

Louella is the club secretary, Leta is the parliamentarian and by-laws chairman, while Chris serves on many of the committees in the organization.

Being firm believers in promoting their French culture and heritage, Louella and Leta also belong to the Cajun Culture Association.
