McNeese State’s football team returns to Southland Conference action this week and the Cowboys will be on television again.

Last week, Fox Sports Net televised the McNeese-LSU game and on Saturday, WHNO out of New Orleans will originate the McNeese-Southeastern La. game from Hammond with Fox 29’s CW channel (7 on SuddenLink) picking up the game. It will have a 6:05 p.m. kickoff.

Veteran play-by-play announcer Ken Bertholet will be joined by analyst Rene Nadeau and sideline reporter Kristen Eargle for the telecast.

Both the Cowboys and the Lions go into the game with 1-1 league marks, both trailing SLC leaders Stephen F. Austin and Sam Houston State by one game. Nicholls and Northwestern State are also 1-1 while Texas State and Central Arkansas are 0-2.

Other league games this week will have the two leaders – Sam Houston and SFA – playing at Reliant Stadium in Houston (3 p.m. kickoff), Northwestern State playing at Texas State (3 p.m.) and Central Arkansas at Nicholls (4 p.m.)

McNeese is now 2-4 on the year as is Southeastern. Besides last week’s setback at the hands of No. 6 ranked LSU (32-10), the Cowboys have also dropped games to No. 16 ranked Missouri (50-6), to Cal Poly (40-14) and to SFA (32-27) while defeating Lamar (30-27) and Northwestern State (24-7).

Lamar is the only common opponent for the two teams thus far, the Lions bowing to the Cardinals 29-28. Other losses have been to Tulane (27-21), UL Monroe (21-20) and to Sam Houston State (57-7) while victories have been over Tenn-Martin (24-10) and Texas State (49-24).

A year ago the Cowboys posted a 36-35 victory over the Lions with Richard Conner catching a game winning five yard pass from quarterback Derrick Fourroux with only 40 seconds left to play.

McNeese outscored the Lions 12-0 in the final quarter to come from behind and win that game.

It was the fourth straight win for McNeese over Southeastern, the Cowboys now holding a 20-15 edge in the series. The Cowboys are 15-5 against the Lions in Lake Charles but only 5-10 in Hammond. McNeese did win the last meeting there, 24-14 in 2008.
